Stabilisers for Heat Stability
Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is thermally unstable at its processing temperatures. Therefore, heat stabilisers are widely used to protect the vinyl products at all process stages by improving resistance to safeguard PVC products at high temperature.
Polyblend provides technical expertise and support in advising of the correct stabiliser from its range to offer heat stability for plastisol at different processing temperatures. Also, additional attributes can be low initial viscosity control, low volatile organic compounds (VOCs), low phenol and a substance of very high concern (SVHC) free products are available for applications that require it.
Plasticisers for Flexibility
Plasticisers are colourless and odourless liquids used primarily to soften plastic. They consist of a range of substances with varying chemistries and molecules used to generally make PVC and other polymers softer and flexible. Plasticisers transform the physical properties of PVC as well as other polymers, creating a wide range of flexible and durable applications.
Because plasticisers are so widely used, they have undergone extensive testing for possible health and environmental effects and are among the most widely researched of all chemical substances. PVC Polymer (resins)
Most of us use polyvinyl chloride (PVC, or vinyl) every day. Around our homes, PVC is used in a wide range of products: pipes for our fresh water, drainage pipes, floor coverings, window frames, sports equipment, cabling, tool handles, kitchen cabinetry, wall cladding and food packaging. PVC is equally useful at work where you will find PVC in furniture, stationery and in the equipment we use. Not surprisingly, PVC is the one of the most common plastics and has been in wide scale use for over 60 years. It is one of the most researched and thoroughly tested materials in the world. It meets stringent international standards for safety and health purposes for the applications for which it is used.
PVC Polymer Characterisation: Molecular Weight
PVC resins are polymerised to different molecular weights to suit the particular processing technique and end-user application requirements. Normally, for production control, the molecular weight is expressed in terms of K value. Commercially available PVC grades are commonly supplied in K values ranging from 60-80.
Blowing Agents (powder form).
Blowing agents are defined as compounds which are thermally unstable and decompose to yield gas at the desired polymer processing temperature, and are widely used to expand plastics to create a cellular foam. Most of the chemical blowing agents (CBAs) are organic chemicals. In accordance with the decomposition mechanism, CBAs are generally subdivided into two major categories: exothermic and endothermic. Customers can select the suitable type according to the environmental conditions and actual use.
Among all industrial blowing agents, ADC is the most economical and most widely applied organic chemical blowing agent. It has good dispersibility, large gas yield and nontoxic decomposition products. It is a pale-yellow colour in powder form, is odourless, and is mainly used for production of closed-cell foam products.
Viscosity and Rheology Modifiers in PVC
PVC plastisol’s (or Polymer blends) are designed to satisfy a particular rheology profile. This behaviour may be obtained by a combination of different PVC resins with different rheological behaviours to achieve the desired viscosity and rheology profile, but sometimes the addition of a viscosity modifier (depressant) is necessary.
The precise adjustment of the viscosity in every single process step is essential in PVC plastisol applications. In this way, you can ensure consistent processing and consistent product quality. This permits an easier movement with less friction of the particles and stabilises the viscosity and the storage behaviour of the entire system.
